New beer on the block: Carlsberg UK set to launch gluten-free San Miguel

It’s a good time to be a coeliac lager-drinker. Peroni Nastro Azzurro rolled out a gluten-free version of their beer last year – I’ve swilled back a cold bottles in Italy, Pizza Express, and found four-packs in both Tesco and Morrisons.

It’s by far the best thing since gluten-free sliced bread – literally tastes no different to the original but it’s totally safe to drink, brewed with a special enzyme at the start of the fermentation process to eliminate gluten.

It’s obviously made other flagship brands stand up and take notice – because Carlsberg UK is taking on the gluten-free market with a San Miguel for gluten dodgers this September.

As with Peroni, the brand are launching exclusively with Tesco and will also be available to all on-trade customers. The Spanish lager will have the same taste as San Miguel Especial; full-bodied with fruit and bread aromas.

Vice president of marketing for Carlsberg UK, Liam Newton has said:

“The demand for premium world beers with heritage and authenticity is showing no sign of abating, so we’re proud that we’re able to make the San Miguel experience inclusive for everyone.

Gluten free is the major driver in the free-from market and following previous success in Spain, we’re confident that San Miguel gluten free will be a hit with UK consumers.”

They’re due to hit the shelves at Tesco on the 19 September, available in 330ml multipacks of six, shouting lager lager lager lager…
